Recipes for Pet Treats

Did you know that you can make your own recipes for pet treats that are organic and natural for just about any type of animal?

We love making up and finding recipes for wholesome, nutritious treats.

Organic pet treats for your cat or dog are pretty easy, and great recipes for healthy horse treats are also easy to find.

But what if you own a bird, lizard or fish?

Finding good recipes for pet treats for those pets might not be quite so easy.

No worries!…Fortunately, we here at gonaturalpet.com have some quick and easy recipes for pet treats that (of course) use organic and natural ingredients, and we're happy to share them.

We give these natural pet treats to our own pets, and they love them.

Yet...best of all, in addition to being terrifically tasty snacks, they're healthy, wholesome and nutritious!

Let's begin…with an easy-to-prepare recipe for a truly tasty homemade treat that will enhance your bird's diet with fresh fruit.

The added benefit is that these natural pet treats are even fun for your bird to eat!

Remember, wherever possible, use natural or organic ingredients when making your recipes for pet treats. That way, your yummies will be as healthy, nutritious and delicious as they can be.

Fruity Frozen Bird Pops

You'll need these ingredients…

  • Any combination of fresh fruit that is safe for birds. Consider bananas, oranges, berries, grapes, papaya and/or mango, for example
  • Nuts (optional)
  • Your bird's favorite seed or pellets (also optional)

Then…

  1. Using your blender, combine the ingredients to create a smooth paste
  2. Then pour the mixture into ice cube trays or ice pop (popsicle-type) molds
  3. Freeze until solid
  4. Consider covering the trays or molds with plastic wrap and then inserting tongue depressors or popsicle sticks you've cut in half through the wrap and into the pops while they're still liquid
  5. That gives your bird a place to hang onto while they enjoy their fruity frozen treat!

This homemade bird treat just couldn't be any easier to make or more delicious and nutritious.

Next

Lizards can be a bit trickier, because the treat your pet will enjoy depends on whether their particular species is carnivorous, herbivorous or omnivorous.

For pure carnivores use all meat and meat juice instead of fruit and freeze.

Yet, here's a healthy recipe for pet treats that crested geckos seem to especially enjoy. Again, use natural or organic ingredients whenever possible.

Crested Gecko Fruit Smoothies

You'll need these ingredients…

  • One large can (28 ounces/800 grams) of unsweetened mango pulp
  • One small ripe banana
  • One or two pears (a bit overripe)
  • Three or four figs
  • A couple of other fresh fruits - you could add a few blackberries, grapes, raspberries or strawberries, for example, but avoid all citrus fruits
  • One single-serving container of low-fat, unsweetened, flavored yogurt (peach, mixed berries or strawberry)

Then…

  1. Blend all the fruits together until they're smooth, and then pour the blended fruits into a mixing bowl
  2. Mix in the yogurt
  3. Spoon the mixture into ice cube trays and freeze
  4. Serve thawed in your gecko's food bowl. Fruit spoils quickly, so remove anything your pet doesn't eat within a few hours

Now, for Fish…

Your fish deserve healthy, nutritious natural pet treats too.

These can be quite simple, requiring little to no preparation.

  • Consider giving your fish freeze-dried shrimp or bloodworms as treats
  • Some fish also love fresh peas (smooshed), romaine lettuce and spinach. Just make sure this type of food is safe for your fish.

Remember…even though these natural pet treats and organic pet treats for your bird, lizard or fish are healthy and nutritious, they are treats.

Please don't give them to your pet too often.

Feeding your pet organic or natural nutritionally complete food every day is essential. Treats should be reserved for occasional use.
